Wanda: The disappointment

After watching the movie Wanda I have to say that I was very disappointed with the movie. I would like to think that I am a fairly open minded movie goer, one that is not opposed to watching "experimental films" however, I just had the most trouble following this movie. I do not meant that the plot was difficult to follow I mean the basic plot was a desperate woman with nothing to lose getting caught up with a petty criminal. What I had trouble understanding was why make a movie like this in which there seemed to be little character development and no resolution in the end. This movie fails to answer these questions and left me wondering what was the point.
In order to get the point of this movie one has to read what has been written about the movie by critics and fellow director. The point seemed to be that Barbra Loden made this movie as a window into what she was feeling in the seventies as a female director in a male driven occupation. Hence the feeling of not having a place to belong and just taking what is given that is ever present through the movie. Knowing this does allow me to understand the movie a bit better and appreciate it for this intent but that does not make it a movie I would chose to watch again.
I wished that the movie had a character I could identify with or at leaf feel sympathetic toward because then I could have felt for her and rooted for her to make the right decisions. However, because of the lack of likability I just found myself uninterested and staring at the clock. This reaction is such a disservice to a movie that has an important message but what good is it if the audience is never able to get interested in the film enough to care.

For me the lack of character made me like it more. I had to think more about the characters actions and got to make my own opinions about them, rather then having them laid out for me.

I agree, but we can learn from this film. This film helps us determine the movies that we like and dislike. I find myself better understanding the reasons why I like a film by watching films that are out of my comfort zone.

While, I didn't like the movie a whole bunch. There was a part of me that wished there was going to be a turning point in the movie in which Wanda's character was going to have a better life in the end. But as we all saw she was just going to repeat the cycle all over again. I just wanted it to pick up a little.

I appreciated that you could articulate well the reasons that you didn't enjoy the film. I had a bit of a different reaction to it- the way Wanda's character progresses so slowly and it takes you so long to figure out what she is all about actually made me want to continue watching. I was drawn to it because I was curious to learn what Wanda's motivations, etc. were. She came across as a mystery to me, and very realistic rather than boring.

It is interesting the for the precise reasons you disliked this film, those are the elements that should be studied. I guess this film isn't really about the 'likeability' factor , but interesting post and good reasoning.

I see where you are coming from, and I imagine that the lack of real closure at the end of the film did not help at all. Well, there is no way I could personally identify with Wanda, but I felt sorry for her. She is a bad mother and wife, and I think that is a horrible thing, but the way she acted in the movie was similar to a prostitute... lost in the world, desperate for money, and would do anything for security. We can learn from Wanda's character though... WOMEN DON'T BE LIKE WANDA!
